Glencore's 2015 Sustainability Report is now available on our website at: http://www.glencore.com/sustainability/our-progress/sustainability-reports/
Our 2015 Sustainability Report is available as both a full report, providing detailed content on our approach to sustainability and our performance during the year, and as a highlights booklet, which provides a succinct overview of our progress during 2015. In addition, this year we have produced a standalone Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) databook, which is compliant with the requirements of GRI's G4 standard.
Our 2015 Sustainability Report focuses on the areas of sustainability that have been assessed to be material to the Group:
- Safety remains our top priority: we believe that all occupational fatalities and injuries are preventable, and that we can create and maintain safe workplaces for all our people with strong safety leadership. It is with deep sadness that we report the death of 10 employee and contractors at our operations in 2015. This compares to the 16 fatalities we saw in 2014 and represents a cumulative improvement connected to the introduction of our SafeWork initiative in 2013. Since then we have seen a 62% reduction in fatalities and 70% reduction in incidents involving fatalities.
- Climate change: Glencore recognises the global climate change science as laid out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. We believe that, along with the Paris Agreement, this science will drive a greater number of decisions, policy developments and programmes to restrict greenhouse gas emissions. These changes will affect our business and underlying operations by shaping how we produce and market natural resource commodities. In addition, to detailing our position on climate change in our sustainability report, we will also print a standalone report on the risks and opportunities of climate change for our business.
- Managing occupational health: during 2015, we developed a formal Group health management strategy. This addresses the health risks facing our workforce, their families and the communities inside and outside our gates. Our aim is to become an industry leader in the protection and improvement of our people's and communities' wellbeing.
- Engaging with our communities: our business generates significant socio-economic benefits for the countries in which we operate and for the communities living near to our assets. During the year, we continued to progress our commitment to deliver positive benefits to our local communities. We invested around $94 million in initiatives delivering programmes designed to meet fundamental needs, such as education, health and infrastructure. During 2016, we will publish a standalone report detailing our payments to governments on a country-by-country and project-by-project basis.
- Protecting human rights: Respect for human rights is core to our how we do business and we are committed to operating workplaces that are free of discrimination and harassment. We work with our host communities to improve their knowledge and understanding of human rights. In March 2015, we were admitted to the Plenary Group of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. We look forward to our participation and the opportunity to strengthen our approach to security management through dialogue and sharing of leading practice among the Group's members.
- Managing environmental impacts: we are aware that our global operations can have both a direct and indirect impact on the environment. All our operations monitor their environmental performance, and make continuous efforts to avoid or minimise any impact. During the year, we developed a strategic water management framework which is being rolled out across the business.
