The risk of choking posed by cords and drawstrings accounts for an increase in clothing recalls in both the USA and EU.
In the USA, 10 products in the clothing, textile and fashion category were recalled, an increase of 233% on Q1 2017. The main risks identified were those of fire and choking. Of these 10 products, 6 were clothing items with cords and drawstrings.
Risk of choking posed by clothing with cords and drawstrings was also the biggest risk category resulting in recalls in the EU. Recalls increased by 63% on Q1 2017. Over the same period, recalls of jewelry products have dropped 58% and there were no PPE recalls.
