Swiss Re: Risk Talk on crunching big data Montag, 01. Oktober 2012 - 09:14

1 Oct 2012

Organised by: Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd

The Risk Talk series of the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue brings together international experts and practitioners to discuss current and future economic, political and societal risks as well as opportunities.

The sheer amount of data and the speed at which it is growing is staggering. The structured analysis of this vast amount of data has the potential to change lives. In the Life & Health sector this holds enormous potential for advances in medical research, pharmaceutical development and personalised health care. For re/insurers it is not only about healthcare and monitoring the existence of a disease, but also about managing and predicting risk. Once a risk is quantifiable, it is easier for the re/insurance industry to offer a solution.

The Risk Talk will touch upon three different perspectives where big data intersects with Life & Health. IBM's Watson supercomputer is helping medical professionals diagnose and sort out treatment options for complicated health issues. Non traditional data sources such as mobile phones and social media are being used to track infectious disease in countries where other means are either limited or unavailable. Finally, the re/insurance industry is striving to use all of this data to provide a broader range of product offerings.

For those arriving early to the Risk Talk, you will have the opportunity to learn more about two systems seeking to tackle bid data. Alan Monteforte will be demonstrating The Floow. The Floow is a telematic system designed to make vehicles safer and cheaper. It provides motor insurers, car makers and fleet operators with actionable insights to increase customer loyalty and return on investment. Jamie Bisker of IBM will also be demonstrating Watson before the event. Cognitive systems like Watson may transform how organizations think, act, and operate in the future.

The following speakers will address these and other questions during the Risk Talk.

  • Paul Hately, Global Head of L&H Underwriting & Client Services, Swiss Re
  • Rumi Chunara, Instructor, Harvard Medical School
  • James H. Bisker, Research Relationship Manager, IBM Research - Insurance

This event will be broadcasted live, photographed, videotaped, filmed and/or recorded.
