Glencore publishes 2018 Sustainability Report
Glencore plc ("Glencore") has published its 2018 sustainability report in alignment with the reporting requirements of the Global Reporting Index. The report can be found on our website.
Our 2018 sustainability report focuses on the material topics that have the potential to have the greatest impact on our business activities. We have also included sections on the efforts each of our commodity businesses are undertaking to drive the integration of sustainability at an operational level.
This year's report has a statement from Peter Coates, the Chair of the Board's HSEC Committee, which gives an overview of the Committee's work during the year. We have also expanded our disclosure on the external organisations in which we participate.
We are proud of the progress in our sustainability performance that our assets and business made during the year. Some of the highlights include:
- The publication of our climate change position statement: Furthering our commitment to the transition to a low-carbon economy, which is available on our website
- 9% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
- Year-on-year decrease in occupational diseases
- The finalisation and group-wide rollout of our new water management guideline
- Our continued work through our dam safety assurance programme to maintain the structural integrity of our tailing storage facilities
- The ongoing monitoring and identification of reduction opportunities for our emissions
- Formalised our approach to supply chain management through the finalisation of our Supplier Standards; these will be implemented during 2019
- Zero major or catastrophic environmental incidents
- Our participation in a Swiss government-led advisory group to develop guidance for commodity trading companies on implementing the United Nation's Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
- $95 million spent on community investments
- Participation in the development of various external responsible sourcing frameworks
We recognise that we still face a number of challenges and we are focusing our efforts to continue to advance our performance. Our safety performance was particularly challenging during 2018 and into the first quarter of 2019. We are committed to establishing a sustainable culture of safety in our workplaces and continue to believe that all fatalities, injuries and occupational diseases are preventable.
Over the coming weeks we will also be publishing standalone reports on human rights and water as well as our annual payments to government report and modern slavery statement.
