High-performance sensor solutions for the mobile market

Newsletter_Banner_TMD3719_with_Border_285x220Whether participating in a video call, watching videos, taking photos, reading emails or messaging with friends and family today´s smartphone user wants to access the full display area on their device. Manufacturers look for a smart approach, which often reduces the area needed to house key sensors – or eliminates it entirely. ams enables these approaches through technology which enables sensors to be placed behind an OLED (BOLED) screen. This is no simple accomplishment – both visible and infrared light transmissivity is less than 5% through the display from the sensor to the target and back again to the sensor. However, ams engineers like a challenge. The result is the ams TMD3719, the industry’s first optical sensor that integrates ambient light, proximity, and flicker detection sensing into a single module optimized for a challenging BOLED environment. This enables breakthrough industrial design while reducing manufacturer development time and effort. Through working closely with smartphone manufacturers, ams is a leader offering unmatched technology and an expanding, multi-generation BOLED roadmap.

Innovations in integrated optical sensor operation
The TMD3719 features new and patent-pending innovations to enable ambient light sensing and proximity detection behind the OLED display including: synchronization of the ambient light sensing with the display operation to extract the true light intensity and remove display emissions from the sensor’s light measurements; three proximity infrared VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers) emitters to allow power-emission optimization for best distance detection while dispersing the emissions to reduce IR excitation of the display screen. The latter eliminates visible display distortion.
