Press release, Thursday, 31 March 2022
Galenica and Medicall are jointly expanding their offer for retirement and nursing homes.
Galenica and Medicall are establishing a joint venture to provide medical and pharmaceutical services to retirement and nursing homes in Switzerland. To this end, Galenica is purchasing a 50% share in Emeda Ltd., which was previously 100% owned by Medicall, Switzerland’s largest provider of medical assistance. The Emeda team consists of mobile doctors who specialise in outpatient geriatric medical care for residents of nursing homes. Galenica is contributing logistics and pharmaceutical expertise to the joint venture, thereby complementing Emeda’s range of services for all-round care for the residents of retirement and nursing homes.
Emeda currently looks after the residents of around 20 retirement homes and care centres in the cantons of Zurich, Thurgau, St. Gallen and Solothurn. In addition to general geriatric medicine, the mobile Emeda doctors also offer palliative and psychiatric services. Nursing home staff will also have access to a 24-hour emergency phone number for patients.
The investment by Galenica will expand and enhance the offering with the inclusion of pharmaceutical care for patients in homes. In future, Emeda will be able to access the full range of Galenica services and products, such as the provision of medicines including blister packaging and pharmaceutical advice to nursing homes. In combination with the rapid availability of mobile doctors, the emergency call system and the ability to obtain medicines and care products quickly and easily, the provision of medical care to nursing home residents will be of higher quality, more straightforward and more reliable, as it will all come from a single source.
The joint venture will commence operations in April 2022. Galenica and Medicall will each own 50 % of the shares. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price of the shares.
