ABB to acquire BrightLoop expanding its off-highway vehicle and marine electrification business

  • Acquisition strengthens ABB’s position in the electrification of industrial off-highway vehicles and marine vessels
  • BrightLoop’s modular, software-defined power converters enable compact, high-efficiency energy systems for demanding environments
  • Supports ABB’s strategy to strengthen its position in sustainable transportation and energy transition technologies

ABB today announced it has signed an agreement to acquire BrightLoop, a French innovator in advanced power electronics, to accelerate its electrification strategy in industrial mobility and marine propulsion. The acquisition will expand ABB’s capabilities in delivering compact, rugged, and intelligent power conversion systems tailored for the most demanding applications—from construction and mining equipment to electric ferries and offshore vessels. The transaction is expected to close in Q3 2025, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

As part of the agreement, ABB will acquire an initial 93% controlling interest in BrightLoop, and expects to acquire the remaining 7% minority interests in 2028. BrightLoop’s management team will remain a key part of the business and will be critical to its success under ABB’s ownership.

Founded in 2010 and based in Paris, France, BrightLoop employs around 90 people and generated revenues of approximately 16 million euros in 2024. The business has experienced strong growth in recent years, driven by the accelerating shift toward electrification across its core industries. The company offers a broad portfolio of high- and low-voltage DC/DC converters designed to handle bidirectional power flows with high efficiency, compactness, and scalability. BrightLoop’s technology was originally developed for the high-performance demands of motorsports and is currently featured in all cars on the ABB FIA Formula E grid. This proven track record in one of the world’s most advanced electric racing series underscores the reliability, efficiency, and compactness of its power converters. Building on this foundation, BrightLoop’s solutions have been adopted across a wide range of demanding sectors, including off-highway transportation, marine, aerospace, hydrogen mobility, and defense. ABB and BrightLoop remain committed to serving customers in these sectors while strategically expanding our market presence.

BrightLoop’s converters are built to perform in harsh environments where space, weight, and reliability are critical, making them especially well-suited for electrifying industrial vehicles and marine vessels. In these applications, electrification not only improves energy efficiency but also significantly reduc-es fuel consumption, maintenance needs, and emissions. This results in a lower total cost of owner-ship over the lifecycle of the vehicle or vessel. By leveraging advanced semiconductor technologies such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride, BrightLoop remains at the forefront of high-voltage, high-efficiency power electronics.

“This acquisition is a strategic leap forward in our mission to help transport industries operate leaner and cleaner” said Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction division. “BrightLoop’s software-defined power platform and expertise in high-performance applications will allow us to deliver even more value to our customers as they transition to cleaner, smarter energy systems.”

“We are proud and excited to join the ABB family. With our shared passion for power conversion, we’re ready to support the upcoming wave of electrification in large-scale production” said Florent Liffran, CEO BrightLoop. “Together with the team, and thanks to ABB’s industrial and commercial strength, we will amplify our commitment to delivering outstanding products to fast-growing markets. We’re ex-cited for what lies ahead, and deeply committed to creating value for our customers as part of ABB.”

The integration of BrightLoop’s technology and team will enable ABB to expand its serviceable in-stalled base, enhance its digital capabilities, and accelerate innovation across its electrification portfo-lio. ABB plans to retain BrightLoop’s engineering and manufacturing footprint in France, and to invest in scaling its operations globally. The combined strengths of both companies will support a shared vision: to empower the energy transition through intelligent, efficient, and sustainable power conversion.
