Ypsomed celebrates topping-out ceremony for second plant in Schwerin

Burgdorf, 01.10.2025, 7.00 a.m. – Ypsomed (SIX: YPSN) celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its second plant in Schwerin with over 200 guests from politics, business, and the construction trade. With "Schwerin 2," the company is investing more than half a billion Swiss francs over the coming years in new production halls and facilities, high-bay warehouses, as well as modern office and technical buildings. The plant will be certified according to the international LEED Gold standard for sustainable construction.

Expansion in two phases

The first construction phase of "Schwerin 2" began in January 2025, followed by a groundbreaking ceremony in March. On an area of 37,000 square meters, production halls, a fully automated high-bay warehouse, a modern administration building, and a central technical facility are being built. The official inauguration and production start are planned for early 2027. In a second construction phase, another 17,000 square meters of production space will be added by 2029.

"Schwerin 2 is much more than an additional plant for us – it is a driver of innovation. The most advanced technologies will be used here, making our production even more efficient, flexible, and future-proof. Together with the first plant and our capacities in Switzerland and China, we are ensuring that we can continue to meet the growing demand for safe and user-friendly injection systems in the future," said Simon Michel, CEO of Ypsomed, at the topping-out ceremony.

Sustainability and energy supply

Ypsomed places great importance on sustainable construction. The new building will be certified according to the internationally recognized LEED Gold standard (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). The roofs of the production buildings are fully equipped with photovoltaic systems. The planned installation of a 250-meter-high wind turbine for in-house power supply is currently going through the permitting process.

New jobs and training opportunities

Ypsomed currently employs around 500 people in Schwerin. By the end of 2026, this number is expected to rise to 600, and by 2030 the workforce is projected to reach around 1,000 employees. At the same time, Ypsomed is expanding its training programs: currently, 36 apprentices are completing their training in seven different professions. In the future, there will be around 60 apprenticeship positions, including for the first time placements in the dual study program in mechanical engineering. With this, Ypsomed is making an important contribution to the economic development of the region and offering young people long-term prospects.
