Emhart Glass ist eine Division von Bucher Industries und weltweit führend mit Maschinen und Anlagen für die Glasbehälterindustrie. Die Division plant, sich vermehrt auf die Veränderungen des Marktes von kundenspezifischen high-end Maschinen hin zu Standardmaschinen auszurichten. Die vorgeschlagene neue Ausrichtung der Produktions- und Engineering-Kapazitäten soll die Flexibilität, die Kosteneffizienz sowie die Profitabilität der Division verbessern und gleichzeitig weltweit die Kundennähe sichern.
Seit einigen Jahren beobachtet Emhart Glass eine Verschiebung der Nachfrage von technisch hochstehenden, kundenspezifischen Maschinen zur Formung und Inspektion von Glasbehältern hin zu mehr standardisierten Maschinen und Anlagen im preissensitiveren, mittleren Segment. In aufstrebenden Märkten, wie dem mittleren Osten und Asien, steigt die Nachfrage konstant, während die Märkte in Westeuropa und den USA immer reifer werden. Die einzigartige, globale Präsenz von Emhart Glass bietet die Chance, die Produktion, das Engineering und die Lieferkette den neuen Marktgegebenheiten anzupassen, die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit weiter auszubauen und zugleich Fixkosten zu senken. Um die verschiedenen Marktbedürfnisse optimal abzudecken, plant Emhart Glass, ihre Produktions- und Engineering-Kapazitäten im technisch hochstehenden Marktsegment auf Europa und die USA und diejenigen für das mittlere Marktsegment vor allem in Asien zu konzentrieren. Damit einher geht der Aufbau von Produktions- und Engineering-Kapazitäten in Asien und eine Reduktion von Kapazitäten in Europa und den USA.
Heute betreibt Emhart Glass verschiedene Standorte mit Produktions- und Engineering Kapazitäten. In Schweden werden in Sundsvall, vollständige high-end sowie Standard-Maschinen hergestellt, während der Betrieb in Örebro auf die Herstellung von kritischen und technisch anspruchsvollsten Komponenten für Glasbehälterformungsmaschinen spezialisiert und ausgerichtet ist. Sundsvall betreibt auch das zentrale Lager für den weltweiten Vertrieb von Ersatzteilen. Inspektionsmaschinen werden in Elmira, USA, hergestellt, während die in den letzten fünf Jahren aufgebaute Produktionsstätte in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, heute Standardmaschinen montiert und auf den Einkauf von Komponenten fokussiert ist. Das Joint Venture mit Sanjin besteht seit 2011 und stellt für den chinesischen Markt bestimmte Maschinen zur Formung und Inspektion von Glasbehältern her. Das eigene Forschungszentrum, das mit einer vollständigen Anlage zur Glasbehälter Produktion mit einer Schmelzkapazität von 40 Tonnen Glas pro Tag ausgestattet ist, befindet sich in Windsor, USA. Das Zentrum für Engineering befindet sich am Hauptsitz der Division in Cham, Schweiz.
Zur neuen Ausrichtung von Emhart Glass ist ein umfassendes Massnahmenpaket vorgesehen. Es wird vorgeschlagen, jedem Betrieb verschiedene Aktivitäten und Kapazitäten zuzuordnen. Folgend sind die wichtigsten geplanten Elemente beschrieben:
- Die Produktionsstätte für Formungsmaschinen in Sundsvall konzentriert sich auf high-end Maschinen, wie die “Flaggschiffe” NIS und BIS, sowie auf Standardmaschinen für Kunden, die in Schweden produzierte Maschinen bevorzugen. Daraus resultiert in Sundsvall eine Reduktion der Kapazitäten um rund 50%.
- Das Zentrum für den weltweiten Vertrieb von Ersatzteilen in Sundsvall, soll an ein global präsentes Logistik Unternehmen ausgelagert werden, das für Emhart Glass Ersatzteilzentren in Zentraleuropa, den USA und Asien betreibt. Dadurch wird die Nähe zu den Kunden erhöht und die Ersatzteilverfügbarkeit und Serviceleistungen verbessert.
- Unverändert bleiben die Kapazitäten der modernen Produktionsstätte in Örebro, die auf die Herstellung von kritischen Komponenten spezialisiert ist. Jedoch sollen bisher von europäischen Lieferanten zugekaufte high-end Komponenten wieder vermehrt selbst hergestellt und die Produktion von unkritischen Teilen nach Malaysia und Sanjin, China, ausgelagert werden.
- In Malaysia werden die Kapazitäten zur Produktion von kompletten Standard-Formungsmaschinen inklusive Sektionen und Mechanismen sowie Inspektionsmaschinen des mittleren Marktsegments ausgebaut. Zudem soll ein Engineering Team für Formungs- und Inspektionsmaschinen etabliert werden.
- Im Hinblick auf die Ausbaupläne in Malaysia werden entsprechende Funktionen in Europa und den USA angepasst.
- Gleichzeitig sollen die Geschäftsprozesse optimiert, die Effizienz erhöht und die Qualität von Bestellungen verbessert werden, um die neue Ausrichtung zu unterstützen und Kundenforderungen nach kürzeren Reaktions- und Lieferzeiten nachzukommen.
Die Umsetzung des geplanten umfassenden Massnahmenpakets würde zu einer weltweiten Reduktion von rund 210 Stellen in Europa und den USA führen, davon der grösste Teil in Sundsvall. Dagegen steht ein Aufbau von Kapazitäten und Funktionen mit rund 50 neuen Stellen in Malaysia. Die vorgeschlagenen Massnahmen mit dem leider einhergehenden, grösseren Stellenabbau in Schweden, sind Gegenstand eines Konsultationsverfahrens mit den schwedischen Gewerkschaften. Ein Entscheid über die Massnahmen wird erst nach Abschluss des Konsultationsverfahrens möglich sein. Das Konsultationsverfahren beginnt sofort und wird rund drei Monate dauern. Dabei setzt sich Emhart Glass für eine für alle Beteiligten ausgewogene Lösung ein.
Mit der Umsetzung der geplanten neuen Ausrichtung der Division könnten jährlich EUR 25 Mio. eingespart werden. Die Einsparungen wären graduell wirksam und kämen ab 2015 voll zum Tragen. Zusätzlich sind für 2013 Investitionen von EUR 4 Mio. für den Ausbau der Produktionshalle in Malaysia sowie für Verbesserungen in Sundsvall vorgesehen. Die Einmalkosten für das gesamte, geplante Massnahmenpaket, inklusive Sozialplankosten, Transfer- und Aufbaukosten sowie andere Projektkosten, werden auf insgesamt EUR 15 Mio. geschätzt. Davon sollen rund EUR 12 Mio. bereits per Ende 2012 zurückgestellt werden. Aus diesem Grund wird das operative Ergebnis von Emhart Glass Ende 2012 negativ ausfallen. Bucher Industries bestätigt gleichwohl die Aussichten für das Geschäftsjahr 2012 und rechnet weiterhin mit einer Verbesserung vom Umsatz, Betriebs- und Konzernergebnis.

Emhart Glass plans to leverage its global footprint
Emhart Glass, a division of Bucher Industries and the worldwide market leader in glass container forming machinery, is planning to step up its response to the shift in the glass container markets from customized, high-end equipment to more standardized glass-forming machinery. The proposed realignment of production and engineering capacities will increase the division's flexibility, cost efficiency and profitability, while improving proximity to its customers worldwide.
In recent years, Emhart Glass has faced a gradual shift in demand from high-end, customized equipment to mid-range, more price-competitive and standardized glass container forming and inspection machinery. Demand in emerging markets, such as the Middle East and Asia, is increasing all the time, while markets in Western Europe and the USA are becoming more mature. Emhart Glass, with its unique global footprint, plans to leverage its competitive advantage by adapting its production, engineering and supply chain set-up to the new market environment, while at the same time reducing fixed costs. To serve the different market needs as effectively as possible, Emhart Glass envisages focusing its production and engineering capacities in Europe and the USA on the high-end machine segment, while concentrating the production of medium-range machines mainly in Asia. This would also mean reducing production capacities in Europe and the USA, while increasing engineering and production capacities in Asia.
Today, Emhart Glass operates several production and engineering facilities for glass container forming and inspection machinery. In Sweden, the Sundsvall operation focuses on the manufacture of complete high-end and standardized glass forming machines, while the Örebro operation is highly specialized in the manufacture of critical, high-tech machine parts. The global, centralized spare parts distribution centre is also based in Sundsvall. Inspection machines are produced in Elmira, USA. The Johor Bahru facility in Malaysia has been built up over the last five years for the assembly of standardized forming machines and sourcing of components. The Sanjin joint venture in China, which was established in 2011, is focusing on the manufacture of glass forming and inspection machines for the Chinese market. The Research Center, located in Windsor, USA, has a complete glass container production line with glass melting capacity of 40 tonnes per day. The major engineering base is located in Cham, Switzerland, together with the division's headquarters.
To create the new set-up at Emhart Glass, a comprehensive set of measures is envisaged, including allocating different tasks and capacities to each location. The main elements are as follows:
- Glass forming machine production in Sundsvall will focus on high-end machines like the NIS and BIS “flagships”, as well as on standardized forming machines for those customers who prefer to buy a machine produced in Sweden. This will necessitate downsizing the Sundsvall operations by approximately 50%.
- The parts distribution centre in Sundsvall will be outsourced to a global logistics company, with warehousing to be built up at locations in Central Europe, the USA and Asia. This will increase customer proximity to spare parts and improve service efficiency.
- The capacity of the modern, specialized parts manufacturing operation in Örebro will remain unchanged. However, it is planned to optimize in-sourcing of high-end parts from European suppliers and transfer the production of other, uncritical parts and components to Malaysia and Sanjin, China.
- In Malaysia, production capacity will be increased, with more emphasis on complete standard forming machines, including sections and mechanisms, as well as medium-range inspection machines; furthermore, an engineering team for forming and inspection machines will be established.
- The proposed build-up of engineering and production capacities in Malaysia would necessitate adjustments to the corresponding functions in the USA and Europe.
- To facilitate these changes and meet the shorter response and delivery times requested by customers, the respective business processes will be streamlined to increase efficiency and quality of service in dealing with customer orders.
This comprehensive set of proposed measures is expected to lead to an overall reduction of approximately 210 employees in Europe and the USA, the majority of them in Sundsvall. On the other hand, the build-up of facilities and capabilities in Malaysia would create around 50 additional jobs. As the new set-up would unfortunately result in a sizeable reduction in the number of employees in Sweden, the proposed measures are subject to consultation with the unions before any decision is taken. The consultation process will start immediately and is expected to last around three months. Emhart Glass is committed to finding an equitable solution for all involved.
The implementation of the proposed new set-up would lead to annual savings of EUR 25 million. The savings would take effect gradually, with the full effects felt from 2015 onwards. Additional capital expenditure of EUR 4 million will be committed in 2013 for the extension of the production building in Malaysia and improvements in Sundsvall. The total one-time cost for all the proposed measures, including severance payments, moving and building up production capacity, as well as other project expenses, is estimated at EUR 15 million, of which around EUR 12 million will be accounted for in the 2012 year-end accounts. As a consequence, Emhart Glass will show a negative result for the 2012 business year. However, Bucher Industries is sticking to its forecast for 2012 as a whole and continues to expect improved sales, operating profit and profit for the year.
