Swisscanto Investment Update September 2014 - Zinszyklus in der Übertreibungsphase Montag, 01. September 2014 - 17:06

Zurigo, 1 settembre 2014 – La ripresa economica sta avendo luogo negli USA in misura superiore alle aspettative e in Europa in misura leggermente inferiore.

Investment Update

September 2014

Interest rate cycle in a bubble

Zurich, 1 September 2014 – The economic recovery is taking place in the USA somewhat stronger and in Europa somewhat weaker than expected. This will probably put the European Central Bank (ECB) under pressure to start the expected "quantitative easing" already in September. The expectation of further ECB action is giving price increases for equities and bonds further impetus. We are not changing our tactics for equities and bonds; in currencies, our short position on the euro is being somewhat accentuated.

Instead of the expected "Major rotation" of equities at the expense of bonds, we are experiencing inflows into both investment classes, which has once again lead to lows in yields from European government bonds. In equities, US securities were mostly able to benefit: The US market indicator S&P 500 reached a new historic high of over 2,000 points. Viewed from a global perspective equities are valued fairly and, by contrast, bonds are significantly overvalued. The latter applies to both secure government bonds and government bonds whose yield premiums are now lower than all credit rating categories. Marked triggers, which could provoke an end to the boom for bonds are not on the horizon. The capital markets are still well supported particularly from a technical perspective as a result.

Bonds: The underweight is maintained
The tactical underweight on bonds that we have been practicing for several months in anticipation of the turnaround in interest rates cost us performance. Not only the prices of Swiss Confederation Bonds and Germans Bunds reached new record lows in the past month, the yields in the European peripheral countries also continually sank further and are now at levels lower than before the European debt crisis. The market expectation quite clearly reflects in the record low yields the fact that Japanese conditions could spread with continuing low growth and deflation. Or, will the ECB keep interest rates low for a long time in order to facilitate reducing the continuing high national debt in the Euro countries? We assume that a turnaround in interest rates lead by the US is imminent and therefore are distancing ourselves from it in such a way that we are still able to follow the continuing interest rate cycle trend at a late stage - even if this does cost us some performance again in the short term.

Equities: The overweight is maintained
The equity markets have coped well with a short-term adverse effect through a complete catalogue of geopolitical risks. This development corresponds with our expectations while we have undervalued the strength of the US equity market when compared internationally. We are retaining our overweight in European equities from these fundamental points of view. According to current analysts' estimations, corporate profits are to increase so markedly in no other global region in the coming year as in Europe (+14%) – not least the devaluing of the euro increases the international competitiveness of European companies, which constitutes a desired effect for the ECB's monetary policy. Increasing corporate profits in connection to the market valuation give good reason to expect further increases in prices in European equities. For investors who are experiencing increasing difficulties generating an income from interest rates in the continuing low interest rate environment, the addition of a dividend-rich equity fund is an option.
